I stumbled across an interesting article (http://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=42450) on M4Carbine.net that gives a general overview on the types and use of vertical grips on the AR platform. Specifically, it compares the new Magpul AFG to traditional grip attachments and grip methods, as well as the less conventional KAC hand stop.

I'm thinking of getting a Magpul AFG just to try it, seeing as it's fairly cheap as far as Magpul stuff goes. Good idea, bad idea? Your turn to opine.

Saw that a few weeks ago myself and found it interesting. In the art of the tactical carbine I and II, Costa talk about how VFG's should actually be gripped so much as used as a reference point. The problem with holding a VFG is that most of the weight is above the hand, and therefore sways and is more difficult to properly control. Holding the actual fore-end of the rifle gives much more support, and it is recommended to merely use the grip as a reference point for your hand. Because of this, the Magpul AFG is perfect for anyone who also usually holds the fore-end

Neat that you point that out, I was looking to get one of those AFGs.
I grip my foregrip as it looks in picture 3, not holding it fully, but using it as a hand rest. And my VFG is always very close to the magazine well, allowing me to have a slightly more tucked in shooting stance.
I do the same in real steel, of course. ^^

That's pretty interesting. I've always preferred to put my left hand in front of the magwell on a sort of angle between it and the handguard. If I get a RIS for my M4 I think I'll get an AFG and put it right in front of the magwell, to see how it works.

I hate vertical grips on assault rifles, especially M4s. I only like them on Sub-MGs and CQB weapon. I really like it on MP5s

Not going to even comment on that above.
Anyway, a good point to note is that the AFG is more geared towards sports-shooters. That kind of on-target ergonomics, compared to the handling of a VFG wouldn't be a desirable trade off in the rigors of combat. Hell, climbing over things in airsoft make me grip my gun in twenty different ways, and even though I don't ~shoot~ by holding my foregrip, I still have it on there as more of a utility platform, then a hand-stop to help control my rifle's recoil.
My tew cents.
